Green Tea- A Healthy Habit

When it comes to health, green tea has become a common name in the most household these days. Loaded with immense health benefits, no wonder it is proclaimed to be one of the healthiest and most widely consumed beverages around the world. Though it originated in China its medicinal properties have earned it global popularity.

Although it did not appeal to my taste buds much its health benefits overshadowed my taste buds and now it has become more of a habit than a choice.

Some amazing facts about green tea:-

Be it green tea or black tea both are derived from the leaves of the same plant ? Camellia Sinensis.

What differentiates one from the other is, the process they are made to go through. Black tea is exposed to a higher level of oxidation process than green tea.
For black tea, leaves are allowed to be fully oxidized after it has been harvested. On the contrary green tea is heated to prevent oxidation usually by steaming and pan firing. Which helps retain its light green color and natural flavor. While oxidation turns it into black, brown color with a stronger taste.

Lesser oxidation results in lesser content of caffeine which describes why most green teas are labeled as ‘decaffeinated’.

There are wide varieties of green tea. The higher the quality the cooler and shorter the steeping time.

Green tea can be taken in the morning if the stomach is keeping well. Otherwise, It gives best results when taken between the meals.

Tea is rich in the antioxidant catechins (EGCG) which is a polyphenol, which helps reduce the formation of free radicals in the body. Which ultimately protects cells and molecules from damage and provides innumerable other health benefits.

In this fast-paced world, amidst our hectic schedules, consuming a cup or two of green tea daily is one of the easiest ways to practice healthy living.
