Much has been said and done about over-parenting to date, one of the much talked much-written topics thus far. What is over parenting? In a nutshell, when parents become overprotective and over-concerned about their children’s lives and their life hover around their kids, we name it over parenting, helicopter parenting, lawnmower parenting, and so forth. In wanting to become good parents and provide them a safe and secure future, parents tend to cross the borderline between parenting and over-parenting which is quite subtle and blurred and often gets tagged as over parenting parents. Though over parenting is an act of showing love and concern, it does no good to children and also incurs a potential loss to their autonomy. They become less resilient eventually. There have been so much discourse and debate on the pros and cons of over-parenting but little has been said about what leads to over parenting.
In a new study, Segrin, and co-authors Tricia Burke from Texas State University and Trevor Kauer from the University of Nebraska found that perfectionism might be one driver of over-parenting. Parents who are perfectionists, not only pursue perfection in all their endeavors, they also chase their kids to be perfect in everything they do. Anxious parents also tend to do over parenting. Their anxious mind focuses more on the dark side of the things and more than often they want to save their kids from landing into any unwanted or difficult situation that they have been through once. It has also been discovered that Moms are more prone to overparenting than Dads. That’s why we have terms like Tiger Moms and Momzilla.
